Will Dieter

Owner & Broker in Charge

When were you hired by The Dieter Company?

I grew up in the family business—starting with mowing lawns before I even had a driver’s license. Over time, I graduated to changing light bulbs, fixing toilet flappers, and driving a box truck to deliver linens. After graduating from The Citadel, I spent a few years in Raleigh and Greenville, SC. In March 2004, I was fortunate to return home to Pawleys Island and have proudly been with The Dieter Company ever since.

What are your primary duties at Dieter Company?

As the Owner and Broker-in-Charge, I am responsible for ensuring the satisfaction of all Clients, Owners, and Guests.  By leading a fun and courteous group of rental and real estate professionals, I hope you will be pleased with our hands-on service.

Where were you born and when/ how did you end up in our area?

I’m one of the lucky few who can say I was born and raised in Pawleys Island. It’s been home nearly all of my life, and I’m proud to be part of this special community. After graduating from The Citadel, I enjoyed working in a few other industries, but kept feeling a tug to get back to the coast of South Carolina.  After prayerful consideration and with the right circumstances aligning, I was about to move back and join the family business as the third-generation Dieter.

Your favorite rental property(s) and why?

It’s tough to choose! I have a soft spot for older beach houses with character and charm. I especially love homes on the creek with floating docks—perfect for fishing and crabbing. My family would say any rental must be pet-friendly so our golden retriever and Boston terrier can join the fun.

What do you enjoy doing when not at work?

Anything outdoors and active—especially on the water. Whether it’s fishing in the creek or cruising up the Waccamaw River with family and friends, that’s my happy place.  I love catching the first flounder in Pawleys Creek at sunrise, and it's hard to beat a beautiful Pawleys Island sunset on the river! Of course, I'm proud of my family and enjoy being actively involved with my children's busy sports activities.

Favorite restaurant and what to order?

Bistro 217 is consistently the best fancy meal in town.  Bisquit is great for the kids.  Cabana Bar has the only oceanfront food in Pawleys Island.  Hog Heaven surprisingly offers the best oyster roast when the season is in full swing.  You can't beat the wings at Island Bar. The Islander is a good local sports bar with frequent live music.  Also, the PIT is a great experience.  It's also worth spending one night on the Marshwalk or Grahams Landing in Murrells Inlet; or somewhere like The River Room overlooking the waterway in Georgetown.

What family activities do you recommend?

We have the best family beach on the East Coast.  If you can find somewhere to park, the North end of Pawleys Island is always uncrowded and offers a wide, sandy beach for the little kids.  The fishing is excellent here too!  Other great activities include a trip to Brookgreen Gardens and Atalya Castle, hooking up with a local fishing guide, or checking out our spring and fall festivals around Georgetown and Murrells Inlet.  Find some live music with outdoor seating. If it rains, put together a puzzle or play a classic board game.

What is your best local insider tip?

For Saturday Guests in the Summer - check out a little early;  for arriving guests - check in a little later.  This will help you avoid some of the traffic.   It's easier to get a dining reservation before 6 or after 8, than it is at 7.   Several restaurants also have seating at the bar that doesn't require a reservation.  The PIT has live music almost every night.
