Is Pawleys Island Really An Island

Yes, Pawleys Island is truly an island—but with a twist!

🏝️ What Makes It an Island?

Pawleys Island is a barrier island located off the coast of South Carolina. It’s separated from the mainland by salt marshes and the Pawleys Creek, and bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. The island itself is about 4 miles long and only a few hundred yards wide, giving it that classic narrow barrier island shape.

🌉 How Do You Get There?

There are two causeways that connect the island to the mainland:

  • North Causeway (By Pawleys Island Supplies and Walgreens)
  • South Causeway (Between Food Lion and Lowes Grocery Stores)

These short causeways and bridges make it easy to access the island while still preserving its secluded, laid-back feel.

🏡 What’s on the Island?

The island is mostly residential and historic, with:

  • Vacation rentals in classic Lowcountry beach cottages and newer homes
  • Pawleys Pier VIllage Condominiums and a 2 small Bed & Breakfast Inns
  • No commercial development—no hotels, no shops, no restaurants
  • 3 Primary Boat Ramps on the saltwater creek for launching jon boats, kayaks, etc.
  • Pawleys Island Chapel - non-denominational services June - August

Shopping, dining, and services are located just across the causeways on the mainland.

So yes—Pawleys Island is a real island, and its geography is a big part of what makes it so peaceful, charming, and unique.

Other beach neighborhoods in our area are Litchfield Beach, Litchfield by the Sea and North Litchfield Beach. Our whole area, which includes the mainland and the three other beach communities, is named Pawleys Island but the island really is an island!
