Located at Brookgreen Gardens, this is an extraordinary zoo! From the large, 90 ft high aviary, to the fox exhibit, 2 otter exhibits, water fowl, and more, all of the native animals in the Lowcountry Zoo were either bred and raised in captivity or have sustained a major disability due to injury preventing survival in the wild. "Our compassionate, caring, kind and oh, so hard working, zoo staff is exceptional! Their devotion to and love of the animals at the Lowcountry Zoo shines through with the high quality of care and attention our animals receive every single day." Very cool! Video Tour
Introduce yourself to the wildlife of the Low Country. This is considered a "super cool" nature center! Exhibits are devoted to turtles, alligators, aquariums with aquatic life found in the park, marine invertebrates, and much more!
South Carolina Center for Birds Of Prey A short, one-hour road drive south to Awendaw, SC on Hwy 17 is well worth the trip! Birds of Prey is dedicated to rehabilitate and release more than 600 injured raptors and shorebirds each year. Tours include many aviaries with birds unable to survive in the wild and remain under the care of the center, and the coolest thing is to watch a flight demonstration with falcons, hawks and kites.
Built by Archer Huntington and his wife Anna, and incorporated in 1931, Brookgreen Gardens was the first public sculpture garden in America. Since then, Brookgreen has established a reputation of the finest outdoor sculpture museum in the world with the purpose of collecting, exhibiting and preserving figurative sculptures, plants and animals of the Southeast.
Purchased in 1905 by Wall Street financier, Bernard Baruch, this 16,000 acre reserve is still privately owned and maintained by the Belle Baruch Foundation “for the purpose of teaching and/or research in forestry, marine biology, and the care and propagation of wildlife and flora and fauna in South Carolina, in connection with colleges and/or universities in the state of South Carolina.”
Located on the ocean, and built by Archer and Anna Huntington as their winter residence between 1931 and 1933. The architectural design reflects a Moorish influence and was creatively customized to include indoor and outdoor studios for Anna's art and sculptures. Video Tour
